Production Roles - Compositor

1. What are the main duties of this role?
The production role i will be talking about is the role of a compositor. A compositor is responsible for constructing the final image by combining layers of previously created material. They work at the end of the production line, receiving material from various sources which could be things like rendered computer animation, special effects, graphics, 2D animation, live action and many more. A compositors role is not to correct the mistakes of what is already there, but to improve what has been given to them.

2. What skills and knowledge are needed to achieve this role?
A compositor needs to have extensive knowledge of current compositing software such as Adobe After Effects. Knowledge of other artistic software such as Photoshop is also required. A compositor needs the ability to communicate with colleagues and work as part of a team and also the ability to take direction and willingness to address comments and make changes. It is also important a compositor can work with minimum supervision and also under a lot of pressure as the compositing comes at the end of a production line. a compositor also needs to have technical knowledge of how 3d

3. In which stages of production does the role operate?
This role operates at the end of a production. It occurs once all the footage has been shot, all the effects have been generated and the footage needs putting together to make a final product. The compositor could also have a role in pre-production. They would appear in meetings so they could input into what the limits of compositing are and also to gain an idea of what the story is trying to put across.

4. What are the tools that this role needs to do their job?
A compositors main tool is the software he is working on. It needs to be up to date and operating on a high powered machine, capable of handling the constant rendering and the size of footage/effects.

5. What opportunities are available to those wanting to develop into this role?
Studios in the UK that host studios for compositors include Escape Studios (London) and Hot Knife digital media (Nottingham). Escape studios run a 12 week course in compositing teaching you advanced skills and knowledge for getting into the industry.
